Surroundings
The Lauwersmeer lake. A unique natural preservation area begins just outside the camping: National Park the "Lauwersmeer" was formed as a result of land reclaimed from lake Lauwerszee in 1969.
Woods, meadows, reedbeds and, of course, plenty of water give a home to rare plants and numerous animals. The Lauwersmeer has also become an area where more than one hundred thousand birds find a major resting, breading, foraging and overwintering place.
Bird spotters consider this area an Eldorado. Walkers and cyclists experience nature on their own level when they make use of the vast network of paths. The beaches beside the Lauwersmeer are popular with surfers, swimmers and sun worshipers.
Around the Lauwersmeer you will come across the oldest cultural-landscapes of the Netherlands. Many old villages are built on mounds. Imposing farms, centuries old churches, windmills and stunningly fortified farm buildings (well worth a visit) decorate the landscape. Twisting and turning around the villages, the ancient river beds in the landscape still form small rivers which are perfectly suited for canoe trips.
Apart from the previously mentioned, there is much more to see and experience in the Lauwersland. Camping Lauwerszee offers an excellent base for all your trips throughout this stunning region.
